WILLIMANTIC — A new yoga studio is offering flexibility for its clients in more ways than one.
Chaplin resident Angie Jacques opened Yoga on North (YONO) earlier this month.
The small studio is tucked away at 34 North St., (now located at 59 Church St.) directly across from the town parking lot between North Street and Church Street.
She said she hopes to make yoga affordable, accessible and approachable for everyone.
“There’s a misunderstanding that you need to be flexible to do yoga,” Jacques said. “Yoga can increase flexibility and endurance, but yoga is also great for expanding the lungs and promoting calm.”
For the first month, Jacques is gauging interest in the community to see what classes would be most attended.
Jacques is currently offering relax and restore candlelight yoga, stretch and strengthen yoga, power yoga, lunchtime express yoga, soothing stillness community meditation, gentle yoga flow and happy hour at the “barre” fusion yoga classes.
Most of the classes are one hour long. Every class offers flexible drop-in and no advance registration is required.
Most of the classes are $10-12, except for the community meditation class, which has a suggested donation of $5 for the 30-minute class.
A portion of those proceeds will benefit Operation Fuel.
Jacques is offering a new client discount of 30 days of unlimited classes for $30. Drop-in classes are $12 each, or a 10-class card is $100.
Jacques said she began her exploration into yoga after she suffered a knee injury.
She began teaching yoga in Middletown while she worked as a social worker.
When the opportunity to begin teaching in Willimantic, she jumped at the chance.
“I fell in love with Willimantic,” said Jacques. “It’s so lively and diverse. I felt an immediate connection to the people here.”
