Butoh-Somatics Workshop with Deborah Butler

October 29 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This workshop will offer participants the opportunity to slow down and move in creative ways not otherwise available in everyday/social movement expression. Slowing down, bringing attention inward, and moving from a space of curiosity can greatly enhance our ability to bring imagination to life.

Butoh-Somatics is a poetic journey of dance that will expand your ability to connect to your mind-body and create a sense of flow, ease, and fluidity in your body. Movement is explored at a glacial pace and allowed to emerge from within. This is an opportunity to get to know yourself more deeply and intimately through movement, and experience a sense of joy, wonder, and satisfaction with intention and playfulness.

Butoh is a subversive dance expression that emerged out of Post WWII Japan that explores the hidden aspects of the psyche through movement. Dance is created uniquely and personally using guided imagery, somatic exercises, and poetic language.

Somatics is a term that emerged in the 1960’s to describe a community of body-based practices and disciplines. The term was first used by Thomas Hanna in his book Bodies in Revolt, published in 1968. Somatics can be defined as, “the field which studies the soma: namely, the body as perceived from within by first person perception” (Don Hanlon Johnson).
